Green Whiskers Grain-Free Fresh Dog Food

Here’s a simple recipe for creating a tasty and healthy alternative to canned dog food. For our pooches, we like to mix an equal portion with 1/2 of their dried food.

4 cups dry green lentils; 3 pounds ground beef*; 1.5 cups water; 2 pounds carrots, shredded; 4 packages frozen peas (48 ounces total)

In a large saucepan, add lentils and fill with water until covered by 2 inches. Bring to a boil, turn down to a low simmer and cook uncovered for ten minutes, or until lentils are soft but not mushy. Drain and run under cold water until cool. Set aside.

In a large pan, brown ground beef. Add water and carrots. Stir to incorporate, bring to a low boil, cover and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes or until carrots are soft.

Pour fully cooked ground beef and carrots into an extra-large mixing bowl. Add lentils and stir well. Add peas and stir well. Stir again a few times until mixture reaches room temperature. Refrigerate overnight, then stir well before packaging. Use container sizes that hold enough portions for 4 – 5 days. Store in the refrigerator and freeze extra containers. Allow 24 hours for containers to defrost in the refrigerator.

*Any protein (chicken, turkey or fish) may be used. For a fish alternative, saute the carrots in two tablespoons of olive oil, then stir in 2 ¼ pounds of flaked cooked salmon, remove from heat and add to mixing bowl.
